Glowing Dragonfly Nightlight
I made another laser cut bug this week. It’s a Dragonfly with glowing laser cut wings. Here’s how I did it.

I made window boxes on the laser cutter!
The front windows have desperately needed sprucing up and I finally bit the bullet and I made some Laser Cut Window Boxes. Pretty cool I think. Here’s what else is cool about them: I used local Sugar Maple slabs that we milled and dried ourselves. This was the first time I’ve tried cutting slab wood on the big laser cutter and it went pretty darn well… mostly. You’ll have to watch and see what I mean.
This was quite the stop-and-go design process. I had more than a few moments of wondering why the heck I thought this was a cool idea in the first place or if it would even work. That being said… I’m really glad I stuck with it. This thing is pretty cool (if I say so myself) and I can’t wait to use it.
The walnut + grey + aqua color combo looks even better in real life, and this thing has plenty of room. It’s naturally a bit more delicate than a typical canvas backpack would be; this is more of a handbag alternative. I think it could also make a great lunchbox if you added an insulated lining.
I have a shoe mountain problem, and today I’m making the solution: a shoe rack. Which is quite exciting.
Really I should have made some sort of shoe organizer a long time ago.
I’ve also been looking forward to tackling a woodworking project for a while now. Between the two of us, Michael is the faster woodworker so whenever we have woodworking tasks on a time crunch, typically he handles them. But I wanted to take out some time just for myself to practice.
Today I’m making a Giant Resin Suncatcher at the Makerspace, inspired by the design and beauty of Dreamcatchers to hang in a a bedroom window that gets flooded with light in my home. The wood pieces were laser cut in wenge on our Laguna EX Laser Cutter and then filled with total boat resin.
I designed and made my own handbags in the Makerspace! They’re almost entirely laser cut wood (with the help of some living hinges), with some laser cut leather thrown in as well, and I even got to whip out my sewing machine for the first time in a while! I wanted to put together a design that, although done myself, didn’t look “DIY” -esque, but instead more like a designer handbag.
I shared a couple of photos of Resin Geodes I had made last week on the Makers Workshop Instagram story and had numerous DMs asking for a full tutorial, so here it is! How to Make Resin Geodes.
There are many fantastic tutorials out there on the internet, and this is my method. I tried to structure this video in a way that if you want to make your own geodes at home you can follow along and give it a try. It’s a lot of fun and they *almost* always come out looking pretty neat.
I find playing with light to be so inspiring in the shop and there is something about luminaries that feels cozy, and inviting. I’ve seen amazing paper laser cut luminaries done and I wanted to take it up a notch and use wood and epoxy resin to make it my own; Here’s how it went!
I love lanterns. There is something about them that draws me in and if an idea pops into my head for a new project design, there’s pretty good chance it is probably a lantern or light fixture of some sort. I also love designing for CNC machines. I’ve been on a metal working and welding kick so a natural next project felt like *drum roll please* a CNC Plasma Cut Lantern.
We don’t have a CNC plasma cutter at Makers Workshop so I called up our friend Richard from 42 Fab who agreed to cut my design for me in steel after I prototyped it in cardboard. I am pretty psyched with how this design turned out and learned a lot along the way.
It is almost Valentine’s Day and since the beginning of time Sara has always thought up the most creative and over-the-top ideas for class Valentines (always homemade, by her of course). This year was no exception! Check out these resin hearts she made with real Candy Hearts inside. And also let us know in the comments if you actually like how Candy Hearts taste. They look cute but they’re gross… right?
